NEW YORK, May 4, 2015 – Gillian Small, CUNY Vice Chancellor for Research and Executive Director of the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center, participated in a symposium on New York Regenerative Medicine on Monday, May 4 at the Time Warner Center.
The symposium, which focused on the potential for personalized medical care in the wake of research breakthroughs in stem cell biology and other fields, also featured Susan Solomon (President and CEO, New York Stem Cell Foundation), Eric Schadt (Director of the Icahn Institute for Genomics and Multiscale Biology), Sandra Engle (Senior Principal Scientist, Pfizer) and Marc Tessier-Lavigne (President, Rockefeller University).
The subject is increasingly relevant, especially given the recent announcement of the Precision Medicine Initiative by President Obama. The initiative is aimed to accelerate the realization of disease treatment and prevention that accounts for the individual. Precision medical practices are currently used for the treatment of some cancers, but researchers hope to make them the norm for most diseases
Dr. Small is a widely published cell biologist, with a concentration in molecular, cellular and developmental biology. She is the chief architect of CUNY’s explosive growth in science research bringing vision and talent to the ASRC, CUNY and New York. This, along with her work at CUNY in developing partnerships and collaborations with other prestigious institutions with a goal of developing practical outcomes for research, makes her a much sought after speaker.
